Maximize your body’s performance

Vol.21 No.09

The importance of capacity

The greater the payload capacity, the better your truck will perform per trip, in dollars and in efficiency. Lighter equipment will also consume less energy, by its less mass to move.

Master the basics

Your understanding of the following information is important. When choosing your next vehicle, it will help you determine the capacity of your truck and whether it will be able to perform its functions.

What is Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)?

The GVWR of a truck is its maximum weight. It is established and supplied by the chassis manufacturer; this is the legal maximum that your loaded vehicle can weigh.

What does the payload of a truck mean?

The payload of a truck is the difference between the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and the curb weight of your truck, including all its equipment, so ready to go. It is important to calculate the weight of your truck when its tanks are full, to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Anything you can put in a truck is considered payload. For example, if your truck's GVWR is 19,500 lbs and your curb weight is 9,000 lbs, the load capacity will be 10,500 lbs. This is the payload that your truck can safely carry, including driver, passengers and of course, its cargo.

Choose a Transit body

The weight of your box is therefore your best option to improve your load capacity. Since its design is a more important factor, you owe it to yourself to pay it due attention, before completing your purchase.
